Three Rules-of-Thumb for Dealing with Internet Problems

  1. If you get a message saying the domain name server (DNS) can't find your page and you're sure you've typed it in correctly or clicked on a valid link, try it again - TWO more times! (Sometimes packets don't get there!)
  2. If you get a "Not found" message, the page may be temporarily missing because of miscoding at the target site. Try it again tomorrow...or try the home page for the site and send e-mail asking them to restore the page.
  3. Be aware that sometimes a page you've visited recently may be coming from your cache (or the cache on a proxy server within your company). To get the "fresh" version of the page, click on "Reload" in your tool bar.

Finding and fixing Internet connection problems

1.  Are You Overlooking the Obvious?

Unplugged or loose network cables are easy to miss yet one of the most common reasons you might suddenly find yourself unable to connect to the Internet. That's not a problem on wireless networks, but on most laptops the Wi-Fi radio can be inadvertently shut off instead. On home networks, it's also possible someone unplugged the router.

2.  Rule Out False Alarms

What may seem to be a network problem connecting to the Internet is sometimes simply a Web site (or whatever server is on the other end of the connection) being temporarily offline.
Action - Before assuming your Internet connection is faulty, try visiting several popular Web sites rather than just one.

3.  Avoid IP Address Conflicts

If your computer and another on the network both have the same IP address, the conflict between them will prevent either from working properly online.
Action - To resolve an IP conflict, follow these instructions to release and renew your IP address. If your network uses static IP addresses, manually change your IP to a different number. More »

4.  Check for Computer Firewall Malfunctions

Firewall software running on most computers is intended to prevent unwanted network traffic from disrupting its operation. Unfortunately, these software firewalls can malfunction and start blocking valid Internet traffic. When two software firewalls, such as Windows Firewall plus a third-party product, are installed on the same computer, contention between the two can also incorrectly block traffic.
Action - If you've recently installed or upgraded software firewalls on your computer, temporarily disable them to determine whether it may be the cause of Internet connection problems.

5.  Are You Outside of Wireless Signal Range?

The performance of Wi-Fi network connections depends on distance between the device and the wireless access point. The further away a Wi-Fi device, the slower the local connection generally runs, until it breaks altogether. Wireless signal interference in the area can also limit the effective range of a Wi-Fi connection. Whenever you're unable to reach the access point, you also can't connect to the Internet, obviously.
Action - Use one of these options to measure the strength of your wireless signal and try these ideas to expand the range of your Wi-Fi. More »

DNS Server Problems

When you try to access Google.com, your computer contacts its DNS server and asks for Google.com’s IP address. The default DNS servers your network uses are provided by your Internet service provider, and they may sometimes experience problems.
You can try accessing a website at its IP address directly, which bypasses the DNS server. For example, plug this address into your web browser’s address bar to visit Google directly:

Issues With One Computer

If you’re only experiencing network problems on one computer on your network, it’s likely that there’s a software problem with the computer. The problem could be caused by a virus or some sort of malware or an issue with a specific browser.
Do an antivirus scan on the computer and try installing a different browser and accessing that website in the other browser. There are lots of other software problems that could be the cause, including a misconfigured firewall.

Modem & Router Issues

If you are experiencing problems with a variety of websites, they may be caused by your modem or router. The modem is the device that communicates with your Internet service provider, while the router shares the connection among all the computers and other networked devices in your household. In some cases, the modem and router may be the same device.
Take a look at the router. If green lights are flashing on it, that’s normal and indicates network traffic. If you see a steady, blinking orange light, that generally indicates the problem. The same applies for the modem – a blinking orange light usually indicates a problem.
If the lights indicate that either devices are experiencing a problem, try unplugging them and plugging them back in. This is just like restarting your computer. You may also want to try this even if the lights are blinking normally – we’ve experienced flaky routers that occasionally needed to be reset, just like Windows computers. Bear in mind that it may take your modem a few minutes to reconnect to your Internet service provider.
If you still experience problems, you may need to perform a factory reset on your router or upgrade its firmware. To test whether the problem is really with your router or not, you can plug your computer’s Ethernet cable directly into your modem. If the connection now works properly, it’s clear that the router is causing you problems.

How To Troubleshoot Internet Connection Problems

hand-plugging-in-ethernet-cable
Internet connection problems can be frustrating. Rather than mashing F5 and desperately trying to reload your favorite website when you experience a problem, here are some ways you can troubleshoot the problem and identify the cause.
Ensure you check the physical connections before getting too involved with troubleshooting. Someone could have accidentally kicked the router or modem’s power cable or pulled an Ethernet cable out of a socket, causing the problem.

If you’re among the rising number of Americans who cannot afford a typical, yet expensive, high-speed internet service that is required to function in everyday life, the programs like Internet Essentials, Internet Basics and Connect2Compete explained in this website may help you get online at a price you can afford. Not only will you learn about how to get internet service for only $9.95 a month, you’ll see how you can get a Microsoft Office-loaded notebook computer for only $150, which even includes free training.

We at CheapInternet.com are experts on the low-income internet plans; use us as your official, go-to source for everything you need to know about all the accessible and inexpensive internet service plans that make high-speed broadband internet affordable for everyone.
Understand that these low-cost internet plans are not stripped down, low-speed dial-up services. Not at all. These are blazing fast, high-speed broadband service plans that qualify for the term “broadband internet,” with no special restrictions on their speed or use; these are the same types of plans you would pay many times over for without these beneficial programs. Your internet connection will be either DSL, which works through a telephone company, or cable internet, which as you would imagine comes into your house through a cable connection (with TV or no TV service). Both are fast, operating at the same speed as normal-cost internet plans from the same vendors.
Can’t wait to get started? Go to our list of low-income internet plans right now to see what internet program is available to you. Or, you can see what programs are in your state (click here).

Cheap High Speed Internet Access is Important in Today’s World

Having high-speed internet service available has never been more important than it is today. Tens of millions of Americans are suffering terribly in this poor economy. The official unemployment rate is at near record levels and the real unemployment rate is actually much higher than what’s reported. Most new jobs seem to be part time, as the new healthcare law forces employers to convert as many full-time workers as possible to 29 hours or less. Even though unemployed, or underemployed, these Americans still need internet access for work, family, medical and emergency needs.
The fact is, quality internet access has increasingly become an important key to finding a job. Consider these startling statistics that were recently reported:
  • Most of the nation’s largest companies (over 80% of them according to another recent survey) including large companies like Wal-Mart and Target, now require job applications to be filled out online, rather than in person. No internet access, no job.
  • Students from homes with broadband service have 6-8% higher graduation rates than students without high-speed internet at home. In other words, the digital divide leads to higher dropout rates.
  • 50% of today’s jobs require some minimal technological skills. Experts predict that this will increase to 77% in ten years or less. So, even if you don’t need internet access to get your next job, you’ll need it to get the one after that.

How to Get Cheap or Free Internet Access at Home

There are actually a number of companies that offer low-cost or free home Internet services, but what's available to you will depend on where you live and your financial situation. Here are some options to check into.
Free Internet
If you are a light Internet user and you live in their service area, free high-speed Internet is now available through the telecom company FreedomPop. Just go to freedompop.com and type in your address to find out if they serve your location. If they do, you'll need to buy the $89 Freedom Hub Burst home modem that allows you to access the Internet. You simply plug it in and you're ready to go.
FreedomPop is a non-contract service that provides 1 gigabyte (GB) of data per month for free, which is adequate for sending and receiving emails and surfing the web. If, however, you want more data for things like watching Internet videos or sharing photos you can pay $10/month for 5 GB or $18/month for 10 GB.

Cheap Internet
If FreedomPop is not available in your area, there are other providers that offer high-speed Internet at a low cost. For example, NetZero and Juno now have DSL plans for only $10 per month for the first six months with no data restrictions, provided you live in their service areas and you have a home phone line. After six months the price jumps up to $18 per month.
To search for other high-speed Internet service providers in your area, see ispprovidersinmyarea.com.
Another strategy to get cheaper high-speed Internet is to combine, or bundle it together with your TV and/or phone service. Check with the television and phone providers in your area to see what types of bundle packages they offer.
If, however, you can't find a high-speed service that fits your budget, and you don't mind slower service, consider getting dial-up Internet. If you have a home phone line, NetZero and Juno again provide some very inexpensive dial-up services running $10 and $11 per month respectively.

Why can't I connect to the Internet?

Can’t connect to the internet? Here’s a checklist of things to try to help you diagnose, and maybe even fix the problem.

1. Check to see if there's a known fault with the serviceThe first thing to do is find out if there’s a known network outage (because of planned maintenance, for example,). You'll need to have access to another internet connection to do this. You can also run some basic checks to try and fix the problem, and even book an engineer online if needed.
Go to our area (available 24/7), and follow the on-screen instructions. Or, if you don't have access to another internet connection, you can get live service updates by calling 0800 561 0061.
By the way, if you have more than one account with us, and so use more than one modem or Hub, you’ll need the MAC addresses of the devices. You can find these on the label on the underside of the modem or Hub.
2. Try to connect to another web siteIf you can connect to other web sites, the problem will almost certainly be with the web site that returned the error message. Double check that you have the right web site address, and have spelt it correctly. If you're still having problems, perhaps take a look at our  article.

3. Check and restart your computer and broadband equipment
  • Can't access any web sites? It's always worth checking that power leads and cables are in place to and from your broadband equipment are securely connected.
  • Are you using a modem and router? Try disconnecting your computer from the router, restarting the modem, and then connecting your computer direct to the modem. If you still can't connect, restart both the modem and your computer.

Windows 7 Cannot Connect to Internet

Having problems connecting to the Internet on your new Windows 7 machine? Windows 7 is great and can automatically fix a lot of common problems related to connecting to the Internet, but not all!
The first thing you should try if you having Internet problems is to try and connect from both a wireless and wired connection. You first want to try and narrow down the problem to Windows 7, to your network setup, or to your Internet provider.
Here are some possible solutions you can try that will hopefully get your Internet connection up and running in Windows 7.

Method 1 – Turn Off Firewall/Anti-Virus Programs

One common reason why this problem occurs in new installations of Windows 7 is because of a third-party firewall or anti-virus program. Just to make sure it’s not that, go ahead and uninstall any of these types of programs.
You might be wondering why it would matter, especially if you have the same program running on another computer like XP or Vista. The problem could be that if the firewall or anti-virus program is not compatible with Windows 7, it can accidentally block connections to the Internet.

Method 2 – Install Drivers in Emulation Mode

So if you didn’t buy a new computer and are instead installing Windows 7 on a slightly older machine, you problem could be because of incompatible drivers.
You can fix this in two ways. First, try going to the computer manufactures website and download the latest drivers for your wireless card. Install it and see if the problem is fixed.
If not, it might mean you need to install the driver in compatible mode. You can do this by right-clicking on the executable file, choosing Properties, clicking on the Compatibility tab and checking the box that says “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” and then choose the OS.

Step 1: Testing Internet Explorer without Add-ons

Determine if external programs or add-ons is causing problems. Open Internet Explorer without add-ons to test:
  1. Click Start , type add in the Search box, and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).
Figure : Start menu showing Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) link
Start menu showing Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) link

Troubleshooting Internet Connection Problems

The purpose of this section is to give general tips
on troubleshooting your Internet Connection

While there are many possible configurations, I'll try and cover the most common ones.
Making Sure You Have Correct IP Information
1. Make sure you have the correct IP scheme for your network. This would include the:
  • IP Address
  • Subnet Mask
  • Default Gateway
  • DNS Servers
2. There are a few ways you can see what IP addresses are being assigned.
But generally for:
Win9x - Start / Run / command
Windows2000/XP/Vista - Start / Run / cmd
Windows7 - Start / CMD

The run IPCONFIG /ALL. A sample where a router is used is in the following graphic.
3. IP Address:
If you have a router, common examples would be:
192.168.0.x, 192.168.1.x or 10.0.0.x
If you are directly connect to your DSL or Cable Modem, you should have an IP address that would correspond to something from your ISP.
What you don't want to have is something like 169.254.x.x. This means you are not getting and IP address assigned and needs to be resolved first.
4. Subnet Mask:
Also make sure you have the correct Subnet Mask. Most commonly this would be 255.255.255.0 but might vary if you are not using a router.
5. Default Gateway:
Make sure you have the correct Default Gateway IP address.
With a router, this is typically the IP address of your router.
6. DNS Servers:
Make sure you have the correct DNS Servers.
Sometimes this is the IP address of your router, so it would be the same as the Gateway IP.
Sometimes (as in this example), it is the actual DNS servers used by the ISP.
7. Possible causes for not getting an IP address assigned are:1. Defective cable, network card or port on the router. Make sure you are using all known working components.

2. Your router is not configured for DHCP (which would automatically be assigning IP addresses).

But you need to have this working before proceeding.

4 Quick Solutions To Windows Network Connection Problems

Networks are finicky at best.  Wireless or Ethernet, almost everyone has had their share of network connection problems.  It could be anything from not being to access the Internet despite being connected to the network, to not being able to connect to the network at all.
Unfortunately, network connection problems are sometimes hard to diagnose.  A few articles here on MakeUseOf give some help.  Guy McDowell’s about weak wireless signals, and Karl Gechlik’s about some simple diagnosis steps are both great resources.
Here I will lay out four easy solutions you can try to get your Internet access back.  I will give instructions for Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7.

Check Your Hosts File

Windows can use the hosts file to set IP addresses to particular domains.  This means though that it can be used to redirect or effectively cut off your Internet access.
When I need to troubleshoot an Internet connection, this is usually the first place I look.
To view the file in Windows XP, just open up Notepad and go to File->Open.  Then, navigate to your C drive, then to the “Windows” Folder, then “System32” folder, then “drivers” folder, then “etc” folder and finally, open the file named “hosts“.
You may have to change where it says “Text Documents” to “All Files” to see the hosts file.

After you have the file open, it should look something like this:

Release and Renew Your IP Address

When you connect your computer directly to your cable modem, you’re given a unique IP (Internet Protocol) address assigned by a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server. This is important your address on the Internet and carefully Your IP address doesn’t change often, but there will be times when you’ll be assigned a short-term DHCP lease and will need to release and renew your IP address before you can reconnect to the Internet.

WiFi, Internet problems, possible solutions

ds store

WiFi and Internet problems are hard to diagnose and usually rare, so this is my known list of possible causes /solutions seen here on the forums / experience

This is a work in progress, run through them and see if any of them work or apply to you.

On for some time, then just kicks one off / won't connect

You have a DCHP "lease" which allows a machine to be on a certain amount of time with the router.

Check the time and date are correct in your computers System Preferences and that it's being updated with Apple's time servers.

Check with Airport Utility that there is a update that needs to be applied to the Airport's firmware.

Also run your Software Update fully for OS X too.

If that doesn't work, try this:

Go to your System Preference > Network > Airport > Advanced > Airport and use the "-" button to delete all your saved network connections.

Reboot the machine, and manually connect in the upper right hand corner and when it ask "save to keychain" do that.

Another way is to change your routers network name and/or security features, connect manually in the upper right hand corner and when it asks to save in KeyChain, do so.

Won't connect after wake from sleep, reboot, or coming back into range

If you have a "hidden network" it doesn't broadcast a SSID, the Mac will only ask if it's there upon a reboot or manual connection. Not upon a wake up from sleep or if it gets out of range of the Wifi.

To stop this you need to unhide your network, hidden networks and MAC address filtering offer no protection against hackers.
